Back in 2008, a group of friends from Northcity Church in Papanui started a monthly garage sale which was so successful that soon the profits were able to go back into community projects.
From such humble beginnings, by late 2010 community funding enabled the op shop to employ four young people and a supervisor, offering training opportunities and of course a great op shop.
Since then, the op shop has developed and become a known and much loved hub in the Papanui and Redwood communities.
Early in 2015, an exciting opportunity developed for the op shop to expand and place itself geographically in the community, and Make Me New Opshop was born. Since this time, the op shop has undergone another shift of location and successfully established its presence in its new location in Redwood.
Wayne and Karla Guerin, part of that foundational core back in 2008, now run Make Me New Opshop at 356 Main North Road. It is fast becoming an op shop known for top quality clothes, shoes, and accessories for the community at affordable prices.
Karla offers styling advice, particularly for job interviews and is keen to expand that.
Still strongly part of the Northgate Community Services Trust family, Make Me New Opshop helps to support youth workers in Papanui High and Casebrook Intermediate, and introduces shoppers to wraparound services that Northgate has on offer – from something for the kids, through to parenting courses and cooking classes.
